Background: Ghana's first experimental farming settlement in the Peki region has best completed and handed over to the Government on Saturday (16 May) by the project's co-developer, the West German Government.

The West Germans contributed more than two-thirds of the costs (about 1.8 million sterling) to transform about 1,300 acres of wild jungle into a self-sufficient estate supporting some 100 Ghanaians.

Ghanaian Head of State, Colonel Ignatius Acheampong, who officiated at the handing-over ceremony, said both West German and Ghanaian officials encountered considerable difficulties in getting the project under way.

He hoped that settlements like this would discourage people from drifting into urban areas. He added that the project was developed six years ago to prove that -- with modern farming methods -- life can be as good in the rural area as in urban areas.
