Background: A Tunisian delegation, headed by Prime Minister Hadi Nouira, has been visiting Algeria. It was Mr. Nouira's first visit since Chadli Benjedid became Algeria's President last month.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Nouira, who was accompanied by his Foreign Minister, Mohamed Fitouri, was greeted at Algiers airport on Sunday (25 March) by Mohamed Benahmed Abdelghani, the Algerian Prime Minister. It was one of Mr. Abdelghani's first official functions as Premier -- a post to which he appointed in a break with tradition.
On Monday (26 March), Mr. Nouira paid a special tribute to the former Algerian President, Houari Boumedienne, who died late last year. He laid a wreath on the former President's tomb. The Tunisian Prime Minister's visit has coincided with moves aimed at greater economic co-operation between Tunisia and Algeria. The Tunisian government has been negotiating with Algeria for supplementary gas from the new pipeline to traverse Tunisia. It will carry Algerian gas to Sicily. Mr. Fitouri cut short his visit to Algeria to attend a special meeting of Arab Leauge Foreign and Economic Ministers in Baghdad.
