Background: On Saturday (6th January) the second day of their 5-day visit to the Ivory Coast, Crown Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands and her husband Prince Klaus were shown round the University of Abidjan. Mr. Garagnon, the Rector, escorted them round the buildings of the various Faculties and the library. The University has 3,200 students and is one of the largest in West Africa.

SYNOPSIS: With 3,200 students, Abidjan University is one of the biggest in West Africa.

Crown Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands and her husband, Prince Klaus, were welcomed there by the Rector, Mr. Jean Garagnon, when they paid a visit on Saturday. It was their second day in the Ivory Coast.

The Royal couple inspected models of University buildings, including the library.

Prince Klaus, seen here signing the University's distinguished visitor's book, is no stranger to the Ivory Coast, having served there as secretary in the German Embassy for three years. That was before he married the Dutch Princess in 1966.

The goodwill visit of the Royal couple lasts five days. They will have talks with various ministers, but will also enjoy some lighter moments, such as a visit to the tourist resorts of the African Riviera, 18 kilometres from Abidjan.
