Background: MUCH OF BRITAIN IS STILL IN THE ICY GRIP OF THE WORST WEATHER IN YEARS. THE BRITISH AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION HAS DESCRIBED CONDITIONS IN THE SOUTH AND WEST OF ENGLAND AS BEING LIKE "AN ARCTIC SNOWFIELD". THE COLD WEATHER IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE FOR ANOTHER 24 HOURS.

OVER THE WEEKEND, ENGLAND HAD ITS WORST BLIZZARD SINCE AT LEAST 1947. IN DEVON AND THE OTHER WESTERN COUNTRIES OF ENGLAND, PEOPLE EXPERIENCED THE WORST SNOWDRIFTS IN LIVING MEMORY. IN MANY AREAS THERE WERE MASSIVE SNOW DRIFTS, FROM FIVE TO TWENTY FEET HIGH. WHICH ISOLATED HUNDREDS OF VILLAGES, TOWNS AND TRAVELLERS.

AIR FORCE HELICOPTERS WERE PRESSED INTO SERVICE TO CARRY OUT RESCUE OPERATIONS IN THE WEST COUNTRY. ON DARTMOOR, WHERE DRIFTS WERE UP TO FIFTEEN FEET HIGH, HELICOPTERS WERE USED TO DROP SUPPLIES OF MILK AND YEAST FOR THE BAKERY AND KITCHEN OF DARTMOOR PRISON.

ROAD TRANSPORT WAS AT A STANDSTILL THROUGHOUT COUNTRY AREAS OF SOUTH AND WEST ENGLAND. ALONG THE ROADS, HUNDREDS OF CARS WERE LEFT ABANDONED - AND SOME DRIVERS SLEPT THE NIGHT IN THEIR CARS. CONDITIONS ON THE ROADS WERE SO DIFFICULT THAT THE AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION PUT OUT AN EMPHATIC AND ALMOST UNPRECEDENTED WARNING: "WE BEG MOTORISTS NOT TO TRAVEL. YOU ARE COURTING CERTAIN DISASTER...EVEN ESSENTIAL JOURNEYS SHOULD NOT BE ATTEMPTED."
ALTOGETHER, ABOUT 95,000 MILES OF ROADS WERE SNOWBOUND YESTERDAY (SUNDAY). THE MOTOWAY - THE M.I. - WHICH LINKS LONDON AND THE MAIN MIDLAND CITY OF BIRMINGHAM, WAS ALSO BLOCKED BY SNOW FOR A SHORT PERIOD BEFORE SNOW PLOUGHS CLEARED THE HIGHWAY.

LONDON HAD A COLD WEEKEND BUT ACCORDING TO WEATHER EXPERTS TODAY, IT MAY ESCAPE WORST OF THE FREEZE UP. LONDON AIRPORT WAS CLOSED TO ALL TRAFFIC EARLY YESTERDAY BUT AIRCRAFT SERVICES HAVE SINCE BEEN RESUMED ON A LIMITED SCALE. THIS MORNING, MOST AIR, RAIL AND ROD TRANSPORT SERVICES WERE OPERATING RESTRICTED SERVICES.
