Background: The Race of Champions, at Britain's Brand's Hatch circuit, produced a new motor racing star today (16 March). Briton Tom Pryce gained his first Formula One win and the first for his UOP Shadow Ford team.
Pryce, aged 25, began driving Formula One cars only last season. Today he drove a cool, well-judged race to finish the 40-lap event with an average speed of 113.79 m.p.h. (183.12 k/h). He twice equalled the lap record held by Austrian Niki Lauda.
Another Briton, john Watson, was second in a Surtees, and Sweden's Ronnie Peterson was third in a Lotus Ford.
