    There was a major upset in the Volvo Women's Tennis Cup being held in Mahway, New Jersey, USA on August 26 when Sylvia Hanika of West Germany was beaten by Wendy White of the United States 4-6, 7-6, 6-1. Ms. Hanika, wearing a blue striped shirt and a headband, is seeded number eight in the world but was given the number five seed in this tournament. Ms. White, however, showed flair and determination and after having lost the first set, fought back to win the match. This was not the only upset of the day. Wendy Turnbull, the Australian who is seeded number six in the world, was beaten in straight 6-4, 6-1 by South Africa's Jennifer Mundel, who is ranked only 101. Ms. Mundel, wearing a pink shirt and white skirt, showed impressive strength in her cross-court forehand and this victory over Wendy Turnbull was her best yet.
