SYNOPSIS: A military parade helped usher in the new era of civilian rule. The military have governed for 13 years, most recently under the leadership of General Olusegun Obasanjo who planned the programme for the handover to civilians. He took power four years ago following a coup in which his predecessor General Murtala Mohammed reportedly died of gun shot wounds.
General Obasanjo and his team of senior army officers handed power to the body which grew from his constitutional proposals, a 1,500 strong federal house of representatives, led by President Shehu Shagari who watched the march-past. He won a presidential election in which five candidates were allowed to stand. General Obasanjo is to retire to his farm.
The president-elect was confirmed in office by the Chief Justice, Justice Fatai Williams.
But in accepting the constitution from General Obasanjo, President Shagari is also accepting the problems of governing the oil-rich nation populated by a variety of ethnic groups., His National Party of Nigeria controls only one third of the two elected federal assemblies, and he will need the support of several opposition groups. General Obasanjo called on all Nigerians to support President Shagari whatever their political affiliations. He added that suspicion, rancour and tribalism must be removed to make way for brotherhood, love, unity and faith.
President Shagari also recognised the need to heal divisions. he said the various ethnic groups should be integrated with fairness and without acrimony.
