Background: In Taipei, a total of 160 delegates and observers from 12 countries are attending the Fifth General Assembly of the Asian Parliamentarians Union. Delegates have been urged to speed up the establishment of an Asian Development Centre. The APU General Assembly was opened on Tuesday by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek.
Mr. Jose Laurel, speaker of the Philippine House of Representatives and president of the last APU General Assembly said his government had set aside 600,000 pesos (60,000 sterling) to finance the initial operations of the proposed centre, which will enable regional cooperation among member nation.
Taiwan's Mr. Ku Cheng Kang was elected president of the present General Assembly which will end tomorrow (Friday).
The opening session, heard Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek urge Asians to rely on their own strength in their pursuit for regional peace, security and prosperity.
