Background: With the 1974 World Cup Final only 24 hours away, the Dutch Team transferred their headquarters to lakeside Hotel at Rottach Egern in the spectacular Bavarian Al???ps, flying down in a special flight from Dusseldorf to Munich and then completing the journey with a one hour drive in to the As??? In contrast with the strict security that has marked this competition from the outset, the arrival of the Dutch team at their Hotel alongside the Tegernsee sparked off a wave of informality that only the Dutch have managed to inject into this competition.

Although the local Police provided the usual full turnout of armed uniformed and plain clothes policeman, the local villagers were determined to see the favourites for the World Title and crowded round the old Hotel building, recently used as the headquarters for the Italian team. And when the coach finally arrived, all the guns and rope barriers could not prevent Germans and Dutchmen from breaking through and surrounding the team. With children round their feet and autograph hunters already thrusting out books, pieces of paper and even footballers, the Dutch team members looked relaxed and happy as the Mayor of Rottach Egern presented them with a painting of the area and a traditional cow bell from the Al???. With a typical Bavarian band playing in the background, the players finally disappeared in to the Hotel to watch the first half of the Poland v Brazil third place play off.

Many locals and Dutchmen waited outside and they were now disappointed. In yet another spontaneous gesture that made a mockery of all the security, the Dutch players appeared for a short stroll down to another Hotel - good naturedly siging autographs and talking to Dutch fans, even signing autographs for their "escort" police. Only a police car hovering in the background gave any impression of continued security. After a meal, the players were due to rest at their Hotel before taking their coach to the Munich Olympic Stadium on Sunday afternoon and the 1974 World Cup Final with West Germany.
