TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 1: WALDHEIM: "It is increasingly evident that major changes must take place in the very near future. The fact that such changes now seem possible is due primarily to the determination and the courage of the people of Zimbabwe and their national liberation movement. It is to be hoped that current efforts will make it possible to achieve negotiated settlement in the territory, which, of course, must be in accordance with the provisions of Resolution of 32/116A. In this, the General Assembly again reaffirms there should be no independence before majority rule in obtained, and that any settlement relating to the future of the territory be worked out with the full participation of the people concerned, in accordance with their true aspirations."



SEQ. 2: SALIM: "We must expose, and categorically reject, any attempt by the illegal regime purporting to find a so-called internal solution aimed at retaining the structures of domination and oppression in Rhodesia. And, with equal vehemence, the international community must reject any so-called solution which can only lead to a prolonged, bitter and bloody war."

Background: Major changes had to take place soon in Rhodesia, the United Nations Secretary General, Dr. Kurt Waldheim, told the U.N.'s Special Committee on Decolonisation on Tuesday (24 January). The Tanzanian Ambassador to the United Nations, Mr. Salim A. Salim, who has just been re-elected chairman of the special committee, said any attempts at an internal solution to achieving majority rule had to be rejected.
