Background: President Hafez Al-Assad of Syria has for the first time accused the United States of stirring up a war of terrorism against his government. At a rally in Damascus on Saturday (8 March) which marked the 17th anniversary of the ruling Arab Ba'ath Socialist Party taking power -- he accused the United States and Egypt of being behind attacks by the banned Moslem Brotherhood organisation.

SYNOPSIS: The Syrian President went to Damascus University to make a speech marking the original Ba'athist seizure of power He said the strength of Syria's army had grown threefold in the ten years he'd ruled the country. President Assad said the activities of the United States were blatantly timed. They had ceased during a brief period of truce between Syria and Egypt.

President Assad went on to praise the Soviet Union which, he said, had given arms and political support to liberate Syria and was a great friend.

In a speech the following day (9 March) the President warned counter- revolutionaries in Syria that he would teach them an unforgettable lesson. In his speech, clearly directed at the Moslem Brotherhood, he said terror tactics wouldn't shakes his government. the President's administration has blamed the Brotherhood -- which wants the removal of western influence from Islam -- for a series of bombings and assassinations in Syria.
