Background: President Nixon on Thursday (April 18) had talks in Washington with the Egyptian Minister Ismail Fahmy on the Middle East situation and the continuing fighting between Israeli and Syrian forces on the Golan Heights.

The meeting was also attended by United States Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger who is planning to leave for the Middle East at the end of the month in an effort to negotiate a disengagement of forces agreement between Syria and Israel.

White House spokesman Garald Warren said after the meeting that the discussions covered all developments in the Middle East as part of the diplomacy aimed at finding a peaceful settlement in the area.

Mr. Warren said the United States was concerned about the violence that might harm efforts to bring about a Syria-Israel disengagement agreement.
