Background: On the fourth day of the war in the Middle East (Tuesday 9th October), the Israeli Area Commander in the Golden Heights, Major General Yizhak Hofi, is reported as saying the 'backbone of the Syrian Army has been broken.' However in a televised news conference on Tuesday the special adviser to the Chief of Staff. Major General Aharon Yariv, a former Head of Military Intelligence, warned that the war, on both fronts, would not be a short one and strong nerves would be needed.

General Yariv said both front-lines were being held, and ' a certain stability' now existed. He said heavy causalities had been inflicted on the Arabs. He said the Israeli force were holding the 1967 cease-fire line on the Golan Heights after 'heroic fighting' -- the Syrians had suffered great losses of men and equipment.

Military Correspondents who have toured the fighting zone on the Heights are reported as saying that the Israelis were in virtual control of the entire ceasefire-line. They said the Israelis had crossed the line in some places in pursuit of retreating Syrian armour. The Israelis were also dealing with small groups of Syrian commandos who were apparently spotting targets for Syrian artillery.

General Yariv, in his broadcast, also talked of the battle in the air, He claimed the Israelis had shot down 150 Arab planes in air battles since the Fighting began. (Before the start of the war the Egyptians and Syrian Air Forces were believed to have 946 combat aircraft.) He said the Israelis had suffered much less in the air battles than the Arabs, the he did admit that the Army missile systems had claimed 'quite a number of Israeli planes'.

The General said many hundreds of enemy tanks had been destroyed on both the Golan and Suez fronts. (Before the war it was thought that Syria and Egypt had 3,300 tanks between them.) On the Suez front he said that Israeli forces were now holding a line about tow to three miles (three to five kilometres) from the Canal itself. He said there were about 400 Egyptian tanks on the East Bank, but enemy forces had suffered heavy losses, He said both Egypt and Israel had captured prisoners. Israel had sent a list of presumed prisoners held by Egypt to the International Red Cross.

A new development in the war came on Tuesday on the front with Syria. Israeli aircraft struck at strategic targets inside Syria, including ones near Damascus. The Israelis say their Air Force staged a successful attack on the headquarters of the Syrian Airforce and Army. They also attacked oil refineries, a power station in home, and a radar station in Lebanon. They say the attacks were in retaliation for the Syrian use of long-range Soviet-built "Frog" missiles against settlements in the North of Israel. The rockets, which have a rage of forty miles (sixty kilometres), damaged property and caused over a dozen civilian casualties.

The Syrian authorities say an air attack on Damascus killed four foreigners and wounded at least five others. The dead included a Norwegian United Nations Observer, his wife and their eight-year-old daughter, and the wife of an Indian working for the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation. The Syrians say about a hundred people were injured.
