Background: An exhibition is being held in Nairobi of the latest works of Mr. Francis Musango, one of East Africa's most famous artists.
The exhibition, at the Africa Gallery, was opened by Kenya's assistant Minister for Education, Mr. Charles Rubia.
Mr. Musango has exhibited his works in East Africa, Britain and New York, and his paintings are in collections in many countries including Britain, the United States, the Soviet Union, France, Canada and West Germany.
He was born near Kampala, Uganda, in 1931 and holds degrees in art and divinity. He has been very active in art teaching in East Africa and has contributed paintings to many art shows.
In opening the exhibition Mr. Rubia said the world outside Africa was looking for the identity of Africa through its arts. He said he was sure artists like Mr. Musango would be able to perform the role, not only by producing works that spoke for Africa but by producing works in which local materials were put to use, for it was through the use of local materials that African works of art would grow richer and affectively portray the right image.
