Background: At a military ceremony in Dublin May 10 French General Souard on behalf of the French Government presented to Irish President O'Kelly replicas of regimental colours of the Irish Brigade.

The colours were handed over in the upper yard of Dublin Castle in the presence of Irish Government representatives including Taoiseach (Premier) Eamon de Valera, Minister for External Affairs Alken and Defence Minister Boland. The French Ambassador and delegates of Eire's Defence Forces were also present.

The Irish Brigade also distinguished itself in the service of France in many battles such as those of Ramillies, Blanheim, Fontenoy and Landen. The colours handed over were of the regiments of Berwick, Bulkeley, Clare, Dillon and Walsh.

The replicas - specially made copies of the 18th-century flags - are in silk and attached to the staffs in a traditional manner.
