Background: U.S. Ambassador to Japan Edwin Reischauer is recovering in a Tokyo hospital. The ambassador was stabbed 24 March by a mentally retarded Japanese youth.
The Ambassador, after suffering several set-backs, then began definitely to improve and Friday (10 April) he appeared at a brief news conference. With him was his Japanese wife, Haru. Together they looked over letters of condolence from Japanese citizens. Mr. and Mrs. Reischauer said the "sympathy and thoughtfulness" of the Japanese people had been much appreciated.
Although still confined to a wheel chair, the Ambassador's condition is steadily improving; he is to be released from the hospital shortly.
