After touching down in Dakar, the French test pilot Andre Turcat showed Senegal's President Leopold Senghor and Prime Minister Abdou Diouf over the sleek jetliner.
SYNOPSIS: The French prototype of Concorde, the supersonic airliner jointly developed with Britain, completed its longest flight overseas on Tuesday. The aircraft had flown twenty-eight hundred miles from France to the Senegalese capital of Dakar. It was the aircraft's first transcontinental proving flight and the journey was completed in half the time it would take a conventional jetliner. Concorde flew at an average speed of eleven-hundred and forty miles an hour.
President Leopold Senghor, his wife and Prime Minister Adbou Diuof watched Concorde arrive. The route taken by the aircraft had been largely over the ocean, to avoid causing nuisance with its supersonic boom over land. It at times reached speeds in excess of fourteen-hundred miles an hour.
President Senghor and his party walked out for a closer inspection of the airliner of the future. French test pilot Andre Turcat then invited the head of state aboard. The flight coincides with the arrival of Concorde's Soviet rival, the TU-144, in France for the Paris international Air show.
