Background: Ethiopian University students ended a six-week boycott of classes on Monday (25 March) after the new government sanctioned a number of reforms.

The Government agreed to the formation of a Student's Union at the Haile Selassie I University in the capital, Addis Ababa, and the publication of the students' newspaper. These had been banned fora considerable time under the former government.

The students were also allowed to form a National University Students' Union, taking in college campuses in Addis Ababa, Alemaya and Gondar.

The government's decision -- passed on to he students via the Haile Selassie I University's Board of Governors and Faculty Council -- also restored students who were suspended during last term.

Meanwhile, Ethiopian university lecturers decided to go back to their classrooms for a week, pending a reply from the Board of Governors on a log of requests dealing with the drafting of the revised constitution, freedom of speech and the press, the reformation of the Ethiopian University Teachers Association and the removal of an "unofficial" police station at the Haile Selassie I University.

The student and teachers' strike was part of a general call for reforms, sparked off by a bloodless military revolt late last month which overthrew the old government and rocked the traditional power-base of Emperor Haile Selassie.
