THE PRESIDENT WAS TREATED TO A DISPLAY OF DANCERS AND LARGE CROWDS WERE ON HAND TO MEET THE HEAD OF STATE.

    AT TIMES, IT WAS REPORTED THAT PRESIDENT AHIDJO AND MEMBERS OF HIS PARTY WERE ALMOST MOBBED BY THE ENTHUSIASTIC CROWDS WHO TURNED OUT TO GREET HIM.

    ON MARCH 28, THE DAY OF THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN CAMEROUN, SOME 98 PER CENT OF THE VOTERS REPORTEDLY BACKED PRESIDENT AHIDJO TO RULE FOR ANOTHER FIVE YEARS. THE PRESIDENT WAS THE SOLE RULING PARTY CANDIDATE IN THE ELECTIONS. DURING THE CAMPAIGNING, HE PROMISED HIS COUNTRYMEN THEY WOULD NOT BE EXPLOITED BY ANYONE, AND WARNED FOREIGNERS NOT TO MEDDLE IN THE COUNTRY'S POLITICS. HE ALSO STRESSED THE NEED TO REUNIFY THE COUNTRY AND PUSH ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT.

    HE PAID TRIBUTE DURING THE CAMPAIGN PERIOD TO THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF PROTESTANT AND CATHOLIC MISSIONS IN CAMEROUN, AND ANNOUNCED FUTURE GOVERNMENT RESPONSIBILITY FOR ROADS TO LINK THE COUNTRY'S DIFFERENT REGIONS.
