Background: Prime Minister Salazar of Portugal, his Ministers and a wildly cheering crowd of 100,000 persons greeted the Portuguese liner Santa Maria on her return to Lisbon, Feb 16, after her seizure by rebels last month.

Restored to her owners by the Brazilian Government, the 20,000-ton cruise liner was brought back from Recife, Brazil by loyal crew members under their ship's Master, Captain Mario Maia.

Flag-docked liners, yachts, tugs and fish-boats sounded their sirens as the liner berthed amid the shrill 'Viva,' 'Viva' cries from the thousands on the dockside. Dr. Salazar, labelled a 'dictator' by his opponents, received one of the biggest ovations of his life from the crown at his -unannounced- arrival at the docks.
