Background: Lebanon celebrated Martyrs' Day on Saturday (5 May) to commemorate the execution of several nationalists in 1916 under the Ottoman regime.
In Beirut, a ceremony led by Mayor Ghaled El Turk was held in Martyrs' Square, where 14 nationalists were hanged for advocating independence, and for opposing the Ottoman rule.
Members of the martyrs' families were among the crowd at the wreath-laying ceremony at the Martyrs' monument. Several diplomats and Government leaders also attended.
