Background: In Ethiopa, a major airlift is under way to provide supplies for drought victims in the mountainous region of Gamu Goffa in the Gofa province.

SYNOPSIS: Grain, medicine and clothes are the main items being packed at Bulki airport, for the journey to the nearby mountains where no road transport exists. they'll go to people whose harvests were affected by a lack of rain. Six times a day the Ethiopian Government's Relief and Rehabilitation Commission 'planes are loaded with the supplies.

While the airlift was under way two men were making their way to the area on foot to make sure the victims got adequate provisions of grain and medical services. It's a two-day walk to the drought area from the airport. The Commission's store of grain at the airport is going to take two months to be transported to the areas that need it.

The Relief and Rehabilitation Commission has been very active in providing drought relief, but says it's being hampered by a shortage of trained staff in carrying out its work more fully. It has seven aircraft for dropping supplies into inaccessible areas. Recently it opened an office which operates 24 hours a day to give urgent assistance to people affected by natural calamities throughout Ethiopia.

The grain being dropped on the villages will be used by drought victims until the coming harvest. They'll also be given seeds and agricultural equipment so they will be able to help themselves at the next planting season, when, with luck, the weather will have been a little kinder.
