Background: India has begun celebrations of the 25th anniversary on her independence. The opening ceremony, held at the history Red Fort in the old city of Delhi, was attended by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, government officials and diplomats. Helicopters threw down flowers on to the assembled crowd, which included members of the Chinese Embassy. It was here in the Red Fort, 25 years ago, that Mrs Gandhi's father. Pandit Jewahrlal Nehru, unfurled the national flag after three centuries of British rule. In a speech from the same spot his daughter called on the Indian people to continue their struggle, although the enemy was now poverty instead of imperialism.
