Background: STUDENTS IN TOKYO HAVE AGAIN BEEN PROTESTING AGAINST PROPOSED VISITS TO JAPANESE PARTS BY AMERICAN NUCLEAR SUBMARINES. SEVEN-HUNDRED MEMBERS OF 'ZENGAKUREN' (STUDENTS' SELF-GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATIONS) CLASHED WITH 500 STEEL-HELMETED POLICE YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) IN YOKOSUKA, SOUTH OF THE CAPITAL. EIGHTY STUDENTS WERE INJURED AND 35 OTHERS WERE ARRESTED.

(IT WAS THE THIRD SUCH DEMONSTRATION IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS. JAPAN'S BIGGEST TRADE UNION, THE LEFT WING 'SOHYO' (GENERAL COUNCIL OF JAPANESE TRADE UNIONS) CLAIMS THE SUBMARINES REPRESENT THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS ALLOWING NUCLEAR WEAPONS INTO JAPAN AND COULD MAKE THE COUNTRY A TARGET IN A NUCLEAR WAR.)
