Background: FOR OFFICER CADETS AT SANDHURST ROYAL MILITARY ACADEMY, NEAR LONDON, TUESDAY WAS A DAY FOR MARCH AND COUNTER-MARCH, SALUTING AND STANDING TO ATTENTION, ALL IN FULL DRESS UNIFORM UNDER A MERCILESS SUN.

IN SPITE OF THE POMP AND CEREMONY, HOWEVER, THE WHOLE EXERCISE WAS SIMPLY A REHEARSAL. THE ONLY GUESTS OF HONOUR WERE JOURNALISTS, THE SMART EYES-RIGHT AND SALUTE,TO AN INVISIBLE V.I.P.

THE REAL PARADE TAKES PLACE ON THURSDAY (JULY 24) -- THE SOVEREIGN'S PARADE -- TAKEN, ON BEHALF OF HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH, BY HER HUSBAND, THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH.

BUT WITH TRUE MILITARY THOROUGHNESS, THE SANDHURST MEN WANTED TO ENSURE THAT EVERYTHING WENT SMOOTHLY ON THE BID DAY.

SIX HUNDRED AND THIRTY OFFICER CADETS WENT THROUGH THEIR PACES, LED BY THE ADJUTANT, MAJOR M.W.F. MAXSE, OF THE COLDSTREAM GUARDS. FOR 174 OF THEM, THE REAL PARADE IS THEIR LAST AT THE ACADEMY -- THEY WILL BE RECEIVING THEIR COMMISSIONS AND LEAVING TO BECOME PROFESSIONAL SERVING OFFICERS.

ALSO PASSING OUT AT THE PARADE ARE 22 OFFICER CADETS FROM OVERSEAS, MANY OF THEM FROM RECENTLY INDEPENDENT NATIONS IN AFRICA.
