Background: There was strong police protection for the funeral procession of a murdered Makarios supporter in Cyprus on Friday. The victim, 25-year-old Greek Cypriot George Photiou, was shot as he drove home on Thursday(5 April)
It was believed to be the first death in the current conflict between supporters of President Makarios and those of former Guerrilla leader General George Grivas.

Among mourners at the funeral was Mr. Vassos Lyssarides, leader of EDEK (Democratic Party). Other pro-Makarios parties sent wreaths.

SYNOPSIS: The funeral in Cyprus on Friday of a murder victim. It took place in an atmosphere of tense police security because the authorities believe 25-year-old George Photiou was the first man to die in the current conflict between the island's two Greek Cypriot factions.

Photiou was a supporter of the President, Archbishop Makarios. Police think the men who killed him in a hail of ten bullate were backers of General George Grivas. The former guerrilla leader, who led the fight for independence from Britain, is now hiding in Cyprus.

Larnaca, where the murder took place, has become the centre of violent clashes between the two factions. The President is committed to maintaining the independence of Cyprus, but the Grivas supporters want union with Greece. Mr. Vassos Lyssarides, leader of the pro-Democratic Party, was prominent in the funeral procession. Several other pro-Makarios parties sent wreaths. The funeral passed without incident.
