Background: THE FIRST SERIOUS FIGHTING SINCE THE UNITED NATIONS PEACE KEEPING FORCE BEGAN ASSEMBLING IN CYPRUS, TOOK PLACE THIS MORNING (THURSDAY) IN A VILLAGE ABOUT 40 MILES WEST OF NICOSIA. MORTARS WERE USED, AND GREEK CYPRIOTS SURROUNDING THE TURKISH VILLAGE WERE USING A FERRET SCOUT CAR, MINUS ITS TURRET.

YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) AS THE BUILD UP OF CANADIAN TROOPS CONTINUED, TWO JEEP LOADS TOURED POSITIONS ALONG THE CEASEFIRE LINE - THE 'GREEN LINE' - BETWEEN GREEK AND TURKISH SECTORS OF NICOSIA, AND THE NORTHERN SUBURBS OF THE CAPITAL. THE MEN, DRAWN FROM 'B' COMPANY, 1ST BATTALION, ROYAL CANADIAN 22ND REGIMENT, WERE LED BY THEIR COMMANDING HEADQUARTERS OF THE BRITISH PARATROOPS GUARDING THE LINE AND THEN SAW SOME OF THE TROOPS IN THEIR ROOFTOP POSITIONS. IN THE NORTHERN SUBURBS THEY VISITED THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE TURKISH ARMY CONTINGENT,AND SPOKE WITH THE COMMANDING OFFICER.

A CANADIAN SPOKESMAN EMPHASIZED THAT THIS MOVE DID NOT MEAN THE CANADIANS WERE OPERATIONAL. THE TROOPS WERE MERELY FAMILIARIZING THEMSELVES WITH THE LAY-OUT OF THE OLD CITY OF NICOSIA, WITH ITS TWISTING NARROW STREETS, AND GAINING EXPERIENCE OF DRIVING ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE ROAD.

(BRAZIL IS THE LATEST COUNTRY TO OFFER TROOPS TO THE UNITED NATIONS FORCE - 260 MARINES AND 10 OFFICERS. THE LARGE BRITISH FORCE IS STILL UNDER BRITISH CONTROL BECAUSE THE UNITED NATIONS HAS NOT YET GOT ENOUGH MEN TO TAKE OVER THE 'POLICING' DUTIES.)
