The struggle of the people of the new state will continue to be waged with greater vigour and determination until those parts of Guinea and Cape Verde which remain under the occupation of the Portuguese aggressors have been completely liberated. In that struggle for the consolidation of national independence and eradication of foreign occupation, Tanzania will provide its maximum support. It will also be our duty to do all we can help this new state join the family of nations in this our United Nations, should they so desire. Mr. President, this is going to be one of the historic test cases as to whether the United Nations can stand firm on the side of self-determination, independence and freedom. We strongly appeal to the whole membership of the non-aligned world and to all states to extend recognition to this new state.

Background: Tanzania, one of the first countries to have recognised the state of Guinea-Bissau proclaimed by anti-Portuguese guerrillas, has been urging 135 member states of the United Nations to follow its lead.

Foreign Minister John Maliciously told the U.N. General Assembly on Friday (September 28), that the proclamation of independence provided a historic test case of whether the United Nations really supported the ideals of self-determination, independence and freedom.

At the time of Mr. Molecela's speech, 13 countries had given official recognition to Guinea Bissau.
