Background: In a traditional ceremony marking the Feast of the Purification of Mary, Pope John was filmed by Visnews Feb 1. receiving 300 richly-decorated candles at the Vatican City.

Representatives of many religious orders, Italian and foreign churches and cathedrals, arrived at the Vatican for the candle ceremony, held in the consistory hall of the Papal Palace.

Seated on his throne, Pope John talked to each one as they arrived. After kissing the Pontiff's hands, the church dignitaries made their offering.

According to tradition, some of the candles will be sent by the Pope to Italian and foreign personalities while others are distributed to churches and monasteries.
