Background: PARIS, FRANCE
A former President of Algeria Ahmed Ben Bella, has accused western states of giving birth to a monster in the shape of Israel. Speaking at a session of the Islamic Council of Europe in Paris on September 22, the former rebel nationalist leader made a scathing denunciation of Israel's actions in Lebanon. M. Ben Bella said that while the last Palestinian guerrillas were being evacuated from Beirut. Israeli Defence Minister Ariel Sharon was preparing his forces for decisive action. The former Algerian politician implied Israeli involvement in the recent Beirut massacres of several hundred Palestinian refugees which were carried out by rightist Lebanese militia forces. He described the massacres as among the most heinous acts in human history. No intellectual trick and no pressure group would persuade the islamic states to forget those killed and the role of Zionism, he asserted. M. Ben Bella, the first President of independent Algeria but overthrown in a military coup by Colonel Boumedienne in 1965, was making a rare public appearance after 16 years of detention, which ended in 1981. His host, the Islamic Council of Europe, is a regional body of the Islamic Summit Conference, the organisation which brings together heads of Moslem states.
