Background: On Monday (6 May), Syrian officials claimed four Israeli aircraft had been downed by surface-to-air missiles over the Golen Heights front and around Mount Hermon. A military spokesman said the first plane was shot down during a reconnaissance flight over the mountain, and the other three during an attack on Syrian advanced positions along the Golan Heights.
Residents in the Syrian capital, Damascus, were able to see the missile which hit the reconnaissance aircraft. Soon after, they heard a loud explosion.
Throughout the morning, there was heavy aerial activity over the capital. Residents watched as fighting formations of Syrian MiGo made repeated sorties acrose the city skyline.
Also on Monday, Syrian President Hafez al Assad attended a ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of Martyrs' Day. The occasion commemorates the hanging of Syrian resistance leaders daring the Turkish occupation in 1914.
President Assad lit a commemorative torch at the Martyrs' tomb, in tribute to "those who sacrificed their lives in defence of the homeland's freedom and dignity" from the time of independence to the war of last October.
The ceremony was also attended by Cabinet Ministers, commanders of Arab forces stationed in Syria and religious leaders. Later, there was a procession through Damascus and a rally in the university stadium.
SYNOPSIS: After placing a wreath, the President went to the Officers' Club in Damascus, where a luncheon was served for orphans of the October war victime. Later, there was a parade and a rally at the Univercity Stadium.
