Background: Prime Minister Menderes of Turkey lead the nation Nov 25 in celebrations marking the 37th anniversary of the end of the war with Greece. He made a surprise visit to Edirne, ancient city on the Greek and Bulgarian border, focal point of the liberation of Turkish soil from the Greek Army, which paved the way to a modern and independent Turkish Republic.
So great was the crowd of revellers from many parts of Turkey waiting to welcome the Prime Minister that a parade and carnival with central themes of independence had to be postponed until the forces of order cleared a path.
Finally the Prime Minister and service chiefs watched the anniversary parade with its participants in national costumes and advancing troops in uniforms of the epoque demonstrating battle prowess.
