Background: Police made more than 200 arrests when members of India's right-wing Hindu Nationalist Party held a demonstration outside the Delhi station of All India Radio AIR) on Monday (5 June).

The demonstrators charged that the state-owned radio had become the propaganda arm of the ruling Congress Party.

In an apparent reference to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, a party memorandum presented to the station director also accused the radio of being a "peddler of a personality cult".

When the demonstrators arrived at the station, they found the front of the building cordoned off by a strong force of police, some of them mounted.

In the scuffles that followed, scores were arrested including the Nationalist Party leader, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee.

SYNOPSIS: In New Delhi on Monday, hundreds of demonstrators marched to the Delhi station f All India Radio -- known as AIR. The demonstration was organised by the right-wing Hindu Nationalist Party to protest the broadcast policies of the state -owned radio network.

Outside the AIR building, the marchers ran into a heavy police cordon set up to prevent them from entering the building. In the scuffles that followed, more than 200 protestors were arrested including the leader of the Nationalist Party, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee.

The Nationalist Party says AIR has become the propaganda arm of the ruling Congress Party. And in an apparent reference to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, a party memorandum accuses AIR of being a "peddler of a personality cult". The nationalists have threatened to start an independent radio station if the government fails to act on their charges.
