TRANSCRIPT: QUESTION: "LET ME ASK YOU THIS MR. MADDOX... SOME SAY THAT NOW YOU HAVE WON THAT THIS MIGHT BE CONSIDERED A CHARTER BY EXTREMISTS TO DO AS THEY PLEASE IN THE STATE... WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO SAY TO THAT?"

MADDOX: "WELL THAT'S THE LIBERALS THAT WOULD SAY THAT -- THE PEOPLE WHO WOULD BE A BIT BITTER ABOUT OUR WINNING, BUT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE THE MOST PEACE, TRANQUILLITY AND PROGRESS THAT THIS STATE HAS EVER HAD. OTHERS SAY THAT... ID DON'T THINK THAT ANYBODY RUNNING FOR OFFICE OF GOVERNOR OF ANY STATE, MUCH LESS THE GREAT STATE OF GEORGIA, WOULD WANT ANYTHING BUT PEACE AND HARMONY AND PROGRESS AND BETTER EDUCATION FACILITIES AND BETTER MENTAL HEALTH CARE AND BETTER HIGHWAY PROGRAMMES. I THINK WE ARE HEADED FOR THE GREATEST CRASH PROGRAMME IN THESE AREAS THAT ANY STATE HAS EVER HAD IN AMERICA."

WALLACE: "AND I THINK THIS VOTE OF TODAY SHOWED THE PEOPLE OF OUR NATION AND THE PEOPLE OF OUR STATE, RATHER... AND OF COURSE THE PEOPLE OF OUR NATION TOO... WHO FEEL THAT OVERCENTRALISATION OF GOVERNMENT IS NOT IN THE INTEREST OF ANYONE REGARDLESS OF WHO THEY HAPPEN TO BE."

Background: THE GOVERNOR OF GEORGIA, LESTER MADDOX, DECLARED TODAY (SATURDAY) THAT HE WOULD ACTIVELY SEEK THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY'S PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION.

MR. MADDOX WAS ELECTED GOVERNOR OF GEORGIA IN 1966. HE IS A SELF DECLARED SEGREGATIONALIST, WHO MADE AMERICAN HEADLINES IN THE SUMMER OF 1964. ONE DAY HE STORMED OUT OF HIS FRIED CHICKEN RESTAURANT IN ATLANTA WAVING A PISTOL AT THREE NEGROES WHO TRIED TO ENTER. AS MADDOX CHASED THE NEGROES DOWN THE STREET, A WHITE ONLOOKER CLENCHED HIS FIRST AND SHOUTED "SOME DAY YOU'LL BE GOVERNOR, LESTER." MADDOX USED TO SUPPLY HIS WHITE PATRONS WITH AXE HANDLES AT TWO DOLLARS EACH TO CHASE NEGRO CIVIL RIGHTS SUPPORTERS OUT OS HIS RESTAURANT. LATER HE SOLD IT RATHER THAN COMPLY WITH THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT PROHIBITING RACIAL DISCRIMINATION IN PUBLIC PLACES.

BELOW IS AN INTERVIEW WITH MADDOX, WHEN HE WON THE GOVERNORSHIP OF GEORGIA -- ALSO AN EXTRACT FROM THE SPEECH OF ALABAMA SEGREGATIONALIST, GEORGE WALLACE, ON THE DAY THAT HIS WIFE, LURLEEN, SUCCEEDED HIM AS GOVERNOR OF ALABAMA.
