    Background: Dragon boat race on Dragon Boat Festival is a time honoured tradition in China.

    A big dragon boat race was held on the Pearl River this year as more than 50 boats from suburban people's communes made a cash for Canton.There were more than 4,000 commune members taking part in the race which included women for the first time.

    The first women's boat to come in was from Hsin Ao people's commune.

    Then came the men's race which were first held in separate groups.

    The dragon boats are not of the same length, some hold 70 people, some eight and the longest boat holds 140.The paddlers are cheered by gongs and drums with the cheer leader at the helm hold a flag.The boats race forward to the beat of the gongs and drums.

    The production teams won the day in the men's race.They were from the two people's communes: Hsin Ao people's commune and Shih Ching people's commune.All three teams finished the total distance of 3,000 metres in 11 minutes.The exciting event was watched by more than two hundred thousand spectators from Cantons who added color and new vigour to the age-old festival.
