Background: President Eisenhower left Andrews Air Force Base near Washington, June 12, at the start of his goodwill tour of the Far East. The first stop in his trip is in Anchorage, Alaska, where he will meet his press secretary James Hagerty who has just returned from Tokyo.
To see the President off at the airport was his son Major John Eisenhower and his family. Vice President Nixon and Secretary of State Herter were also present. Among the other officials the President spoke to before he boarded his jet aircraft was the Japanese Ambassador. He is due to arrive in Japan June 19.
Japan will be the last port of call in the American leaders 22,975 mile trip. He 25,000 members of the Japanese police force will be on duty to prevent any serious riots and demonstration of the kind that greeted Press Secretary Hagerty.
