Background: The Formula One racing driver, Jean-Pierre jabouille of France, has been testing the much-criticised surface of the Interlagos racing circuit at Sao Paulo in Brazil. A local newspaper, Folha de Sao Paulo, quoted him as saying after one test that the Brazilian Grand Prix would not take place in January if the circuit was not resurfaced.

SYNOPSIS: The Grand Prix is scheduled here for January the twenty-seventh. Jabouille made a number of runs, testing the track for the Formula One Racing Drivers' Association. At almost the same time, fellow driver Jody Scheckter was strongly criticising the circuit from Paris, where he received the trophy for winning this year's World Championship title. Scheckter said drivers rated Interlagos as the most dangerous Grand Prix circuit, far below the safety standards the drivers demanded. The drivers wanted the Brazilian Grand Prix cancelled.

Scheckter, who's just been elected head of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association, said the Executive association of the Formula One Association had refused on Thursday (13 December) to convene a meeting to discuss the issue.

The same day, the Polho de sao Paulo newspaper quoted Senhor Mario Pati of the Sao Paulo Automobile Club as saying the Brazilian Grand Prix would be held as scheduled on January the twenty-seventh. It is the second of the 1980 series.

As soon as Jabouille's Renault Turbo returned to the pits, a mechanic tested the temperature and wear of the tyres. Jabouill was quoted later in Sao Paulo as repeating Scheckter's warning; no resurfacing, no Grand Prix. The race organisers said they were studying Jabouille's complaint.
