Background: More than two hundred disabled men and women have been preparing at Innsbruck in Austria for their own Winter Olympic games, to be held next year. Athletes from nine countries --- blind people, the visually handicapped and amputees -- took part in a general test of their abilities in Alpine and Nordic skiing events. Blind competitors depended on a lead skier to shout directions to them as they descended the slalom course or took part in the cross-country. For the first time in an international winter sports event, paraplegic athletes completed on the slopes at Innsbruck.
