Background: Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco visited Newport, County Mayo, Ireland, June 15, and saw the cottage where her grandfather lived before emigrating to the United States. She was formerly Grace Kelly, film star daughter of John Kelly, the American millionaire builder.
Police had a hard time controlling the crowds that turned out to greet the royal couple's arrival at the cottage, the walls of which were decorated with photographs of Princess Grace and her family, and a plate to indicate that this was her grandfather's birthplace. Outside the cottage the Prince and Princess were greeted by the present occupants- two elderly ladies - and a priest, then they went inside.
This had been rather a hectic day for the Prince and Princess. It began with a pilgrimage up Ireland's "holy mountain", Croagh Patrick, and then a reception at Westport, where about 60 relatives of Princess Grace were presented to her, and she was given a marble jewel case.
They arrived in Ireland June 10 for a three-day official visit, but have stayed on for a holiday, during which they will visit beauty spots and places associated with the Princess's ancestors.
