Background: At the Nairobi Animal Orphanage on Saturday (July 25), the Kenya Minister for Commerce and Industry presented U.S. industrialist Mr. Raymond C. Firestone with an eight-month old lion cub.
Jimmy, the lion, will be presented to the Overtan Park Zoo in Memphis, Tennessee, U.S.A.
Mr. Firestone was in Nairobi for a foundation stone-laying ceremony by President Kenyatta at the Firestone GBP 6 million sterling tyre factory in Kenya. This is the largest investment of any single industry in East Africa, and it is the first time the Kenya government has presented a lion to an industrialist.
Jimmy will be the first African lion at the Overtan Park Zoo, which was at one time considered to be one of the best zoos in the world. Up until now, the zoo has been relying only on California-bred lions.
The lion cub was taken to the Animal Orphanage in Nairobi after his mother was shot by the Kenya Game Department in Wajir, in the northern part of the country.
At the presentation ceremony, the lion cub was brought out of his cage and played with Mrs. Firestone. The Director of Kenya National Parks, Mr. Perez Olindo, was also present.
