Background: A twenty year old student, Maria Margarita Moran from the Philippines has been chosen as this year's Miss Universe.
Miss Moran was chosen from 61 beauty queens from all over the world on Saturday (21st July) at a theater near the famous Greek Acropolis in Athens.
The audience who paid as much as GBP13 a ticket did not see the contestants in their swimsuits because the Greek authorities objected to the girls appearing semi-clad in the Herod Atticus Roman theater - which is considered almost sacred. The judges and television viewers watched a pro-taped film of the girls in their swimsuits while the contestants waited on stage.
The panel of eleven judges included the American film star Ginger Roger and Horst Bucholz the German film actor.
Miss Moran who is studying hotel management in the Philippines, is a brown eyed brunette. Her looks have won her a total of about GBP19,600 ($50,000) in cash prizes and gifts.
The new Miss Universe likes dancing and swimming and rates President Nixon of the United States as the greatest man in the world. She told the audience that she would like to buy a house with a garden.
After the American television personality, Bob Barker, announced that she had won, Miss Moran burst into tears.
The runner-up was Miss Amanda Jones of the United States.
