A group of delegates from Palestinian public in the occupied West Bank is on a visit in the USSR at the invitation of the Soviet Association of Friendship Societies and the Soviet Committee of Solidarity with Palestinian Arabs.
The group is led by Mayor of Ramallah Mr. Halif Kerim. Among the delegates are editor of At Talia daily Mr Bashir Barghuti, Mayor of the city of Halhul Mr Muhammed Melhem, and deputy mayor of the town of El Bir Mr. Muslin Jamil.
On Friday students of the Lumumba Friendship University had a meeting with the delegates during the Palestine Day mark in the middle of May each year.
Mr Halif Kerim said in part addressing the students:
"It's common knowledge that Palestinian question is the core of the Middle East problem,. The reestablishment of durable peace in this region of the world is only possible if the unalienable rights of the Arab people of Palestine are fully granted and all the foreign lands seized by the Israeli aggressor in 1967 are liberated."
Assessing the situation on the West Bank following the signing of the peace agreement between Egypt and Israel Mr Holif Kerim said that the capitulation of President Sadat seriously deteriorated the situation in the Middle East. He stressed that residents of Nablus, Ramallah and other towns and populated centres strongly denounces the notorious plan for "administrative autonomy" under the Egyptian-Israeli treaty, and that they are fully determined to fight for the creation of a genuinely independent and sovereign Palestinian state.
