Background: Among the many 'traditionalists' who deplore the change in the shape of London's taxis - first seen at the Motor show and here filmed by Visnews - none can do so more than John Houghton, veteran car enthusiast and managing director of the Brixton Road premises of the London General Cab Company.

For Mr. Houghton's love is for 'old' taxis.

Rooting in an East Peckham Kent Farmyard Mr. Houghton found a 1912 Unic taxi, off the road since 1928. he filled it with petrol and water, paid the farmer a cheque, and drove it thirty miles to London. Now being completely overhauled and rebuilt by craftsmen, it is the first of the collection of four (a 1912 Unic, a 1934 Austin, a 1910 Panhard and a 1933 Austin TT - known in its hey-day as 'the Upright Grand' or the 'Chinese Piano'.)
The aim of Mr. Houghton - as he explains in this interview (S.O.F.) is to get these beauties (and as many others like them as he can acquire) back on to the road.
