Background: THE WORLD HAIRDRESSING CHAMPIONSHIPS ENDED IN BASLE, SWITZERLAND LAST NIGHT (TUESDAY). THE CHAMPIONSHIPS LASTED FOR THREE DAYS.

TWO HUNDRED AND TWENTY HAIRDRESSERS FROM TWENTY-TWO COUNTRIES TOOK PART IN THE COMPETITIONS FOR THE MAJOR PRIZES. THEY WERE ASKED TO PRESENT FIVE DIFFERENT HAIRSTYLES FOR THE LADY'S COMPETITION, AND THREE DIFFERENT CUTS IN THE MEN'S COMPETITION.

JAPAN WAS REPRESENTED FOR THE FIRST TIME AT AN INTERNATIONAL HAIRDRESSING CHAMPIONSHIP, AND THE JAPANESE MODELS WERE WATCHED WITH GREAT INTEREST BY THE EUROPEAN COMPETITORS. MR. MANO, A TOKYO COIFFEUR, PRESENTED A STYLE THAT WAS DISTINCTIVELY JAPANESE.

THE EMPHASIS IN THE LADIES COMPETITION WAS ON SIMPLE AND MAINLY SHORT-CUT STYLES WHICH COULD BE WORN ON ALMOST ANY OCCASION.

AMONG THE MOST FAMOUS HAIRDRESSERS PRESENT WAS ROGER PARA WHOSE "SOLEIL LEVANT" ATTRACTED A LOT OF COMMENT. ANOTHER FAMOUS NAME WAS JACQUES DESSANGE WHO DEMONSTRATED A NEW, QUICK COLOURING METHOD HE HAS DEVELOPED.

SOME OF THE PRIZE WINNERS IN THE MEN'S HAIRDRESSING SECTION WERE MR. LUIS CAPEL OF SPAIN, WHO WON THE FREE HAIRDRESSING CHAMPIONSHIPS; M. BENNALLAL OF FRANCE - A WINNER IN THE STYLING AND "CREW-OUT" SECTION; AND MR. BUSILLET, ALSO OF FRANCE, IN THE RAZOR-CUT SECTION.

THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FOR MEN'S HAIRDRESSING WENT TO M. ROBERT LAMBOT OF BELGIUM. MISS FRIEDA WELNER OF AUSTRIA WON THE WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP.

THERE WAS GREAT EXCITEMENT IN THE GERMAN TEAM WHEN IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT THEY HAD WON THE TEAM EVENT......
