    Background: BOGOTA, COLOMBIA

One person has died and fifteen others have been injured in a fire that swept a large petrol storage complex in the Colombian capital of Bogota. The blaze caused about 4.8 million dollars-worth of damage, and the mayor declared Bogota in a state of emergency as more than one thousand people were evacuated from their homes nearby. Almost two thousand people, including men from the civil defence, the army and the police, helped firemen tackle the blaze, which started around midnight on December 14. The petrol complex is owned by the state-run oil company, Ecopetrol, and the tank was holding 84,000 gallons (380,000 litres) of petrol when it caught fire. It quickly spread to neighbouring tanks. The man who died was a night watchman for the oil company.
