Background: President Philibert Tsiranana of the Malagasy Republic and his Government have embarked on a campaign to cover the island in a "green mantle". The President made the pledge at a ceremony on Sunday on the treeless Tampoketsy Plateau, about 75 miles (130 kms) north of Tananarive.
It's proposed to plant some 1,700,000 trees during 1971. About 3,800,000 have been planted in the past few years. However the President sounded a warning. He said that the programme could receive a serious set back if fires were not carefully looked after. He said they had caused severs damage in the past.
