Background: Please of not guilty were recorded on behalf of six defendants in an Israeli spy trial in a haifa court on Sunday (11 February). They are charged with passing on military information and of being members of an allegedly Syrian-backed spy and sabotage network.

Four of the charged men were Israeli Arabs, including Aboud Osman Turki, leader of the alleged network. There was also Simeon Hadad, a teacher, Subhi Naif Na'arani, television technician, and Anis Arad Karawi, mechanic.

Two of the accused were Jaws: 26-year-old Ehud Adiv and Dan Vered, a 28-year-old school teacher and graduate of the University of Miami. The case of Adiv aroused particular concern among Israelis because in a way he personified the image of the young Israeli -- being the member of a kibbutz (communal ???rm) and having served in the tough paratroop corps. But he was also a member of an extreme left-wing Maoist group, and was described as the prime Jewish suspect in the case.

The trial of the six men is the first of a series of trials in the case, which follows the arrest of forty people and the breaking-up of the alleged spy-ring last December.

Sunday's proceedings lasted only twenty minutes and the case was adjourned until February 25. If found guilty the accused will face possible life sentences.

SYNOPSIS: In Haifa on Sunday, the trial began of six people on charges of giving away Israeli military secrets to Syria.

Two of the defendants are Jaws and the others are Israeli Arabs. All have been charged on various counts of being members of a Syrian backed any and sabotage network. They are the first of forty members of the alleged network to be tried since a concerted drive by security forces last December.

Ehud Adiv on the left, and the Israeli Arab Daoud Turki, were described as ringleaders.

Adiv admitted partial guilt, but finally pl??? of not guilty were recorded on behalf of all six.

Simeon Hadad and Anis Karawi are both Israeli Arabs, while Dan Vered is Jewish. Subhi Na'arani is also an Israeli Arab.
