    Background: ODESSA, USSR

In Odessa, five new world records were set in several categories by Soviet competitors on March 7 in the five-day Soviet Union hosted 'Friendship Cup' tournament. The competition, with 50 athletes from 16 countries participating, has been held every year since 1961. In the heavyweight category, Yuri Zaharevich set a new world record when he lifted 200 kilograms in the snatch -- that is, all in one movement. Zaharevich, a 20 year old technical student, set a new world record in the two-movement heavyweight jerk category when he raise 232.5 kilograms. Then he quickly broke his own record when he lifted a weight of 240 kilograms in the same category. Leonid Taranenko, from Minsk, lifted a world record weight of 242 kilograms in the superheavyweight jerk category. Fellow Soviet, Anatoly Pisarenko, an army officer from Kiev, set a new record snatch lift of 203 kilograms in the superheavyweight category. The Soviet Union won all nine events in the weightlifting section and total of 13 new world records were set during the games.
