Background: MONTAGNARD (HILL) TRIBESMENS AND THEIR WOMEN TOILED THROUGH THE DESOLATE AND BLACKENED VILLAGE OF DAK SON, 75 MILES (120 KMS) NORTH OF SAIGON, ON THURSDAY (7 DECEMBER) TO BURY THEIR DEAD, VICTIMS OF AN ALLEGED REPRISAL MASSACRE BY NORTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS.

SOME 500 NORTH VIETNAMESE SWEPT INTO THE VILLAGE ON MONDAY (4 DECEMBER) KILLING IN REVENGE BECAUSE THE VILLAGERS HAD BETRAYED THEIR POSITIONS TO SOUTH VIETNAMESE FORCES, GOVERNMENT MILITARY OFFICIALS SAID.

SO FAR THE BODIES OF 67 VILLAGERS HAVE BEEN FOUND BUT MORE MAY STILL LIE IN BUNKERS WHERE THE NORTH VIETNAMESE HERDED THEM.

AT THE TIME OF THE ATTACK THE VILLAGE OF 1,778 WAS GUARDED BY TWO PLATOONS OF GOVERNMENT MILITIA. A MILITARY SPOKESMAN SAID THE MILITIA FOUGHT FOR 15 MINUTES BEFORE THE NORTH VIETNAMESE BROKE THROUGH -- THEN PULLED OUT OF THE VILLAGE. IT WAS NOT KNOWN WHO GAVE THEM THE ORDER TO ABANDON THE VILLAGE.
