Background: At a Malmoe, Sweden, athletics meeting September 20, Australian Olympic Champion Herb Elliott failed in a bid to reduce his world mile record. But - with a time of 3 minutes, 58.6 seconds - achieved the distance in less than four minutes for the 15th time. D. Waern of Sweden came second in 3 minutes, 59 seconds, after a close struggle.
Elliott will run in another mile race in Dublin September 23 where he will meet exiled Hungarian runner, L. Taboni.
The two athletes will again compete in the mile in London, September 28.
